Proof of work (PoW) is a cryptographic protocol that's used in cryptocurrencies to validate transactions and secure blockchains. It's a decentralized consensus mechanism that involves network members, or miners, competing to solve a mathematical puzzle. The winner of the competition is rewarded with new cryptocurrency and the right to add the latest batch of transactions to the blockchain.
